nikon d7000 best dslr cameraThe Nikon D7000 is the brand’s latest mid level DSLR, housed inside a magnesium alloy body. Highlights include the 16.2MP CMOS sensor, the new speedy “Expeed 2” processor, full 1080p movie recording, 912,000 dot 3 inch LCD. It also features Nikon’s new 39 point AF system which includes 3D tracking and a 2016 pixel RGB metering sensor.

The new Expeed 2 image processor is a multitasking system which can shoot at 6 frames per second. Focusing performance like the face recognition in Live View mode has also been improved greatly, allowing you to concentrate on composition.

The camera has a wider range from DX format. With the D7000 now on the scene, ISO 100 – 6400 is the standard, allowing for a broader range of lighting situations to be captured. There have also been upgrades to Nikon’s noise reduction technology.

The D7000 has an in-built exposure metering 2016 pixel RGB sensor which reads the brightness and colors of a scene with high accuracy. It can apply its reading to optimize exposure, autofocus, i-TTL flash calculations and white balance. Due to the high pixel count, it can recognize tiny subjects, whether moving or still.

39 AF points cover a very wide frame area and utilizesa cross-type sensors, which will be a welcome capability for portrait and macro shooters. The 9 cross-type sensors function with any AF NIKKOR lens f/5.6 or faster.

AF area modes include dynamic area AF which uses 9, 21, 39 points. You can switch between these 3 points, dependent upon the movement of your subjects. The AF and surrounding points can automatically track the subjects.

Nikon 7000: Technical Details

  • High Res 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor
  • Body only; lenses separate
  • 6 frames per second continual shooting; up to 100 shots
  • Full 1080p HD Movies w/ Full-Time Auto-focus
  • Dynamic ISO range: 100 to 6400

Nikon have made the interface more streamlined and user friendly. If you want to change flash modes, you just need to push the flash pop-up button and then rotate the control wheel. To set up and use User defined mode you just set up one of the two modes, go into the menu and save it, then rotate shooting mode to either U1 or U2.

The D7000 has just one position on it’s shooting mode dial for scene mode shots. To filter through the various scene modes, you just rotate the control wheel and the scenes will be displayed on the back screen.

Low light shooting with the D7000 is fantastic; a breath of fresh air for users of the D300, which was generally clean at ISO 400 and usable to 1600. The D7000 is more like the D700 – clean at ISO 1600 and usable to 6400. By using ISO 1600 you get equal to four times more light and use a sixteenth of the power to get 3-4 more shots. A big difference.

“The image sensor is amazing, the response of the shutter button like lightening, the auto-focus system is mystically accurate … there is little to complain about with this camera.”

“Very happy with the speed, build quality, and low light performance. The dual card slots and 100% viewfinder are a great touch.”
