The Canon EOS Rebel XS, which features Canon’s DIGIC III processor, is a compact DSLR camera with a 2.5 inch LCD and 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. The camera has received several great reviews for being great for both beginners and experienced photographers alike. So, what’s all the fuss about?
The entire electronic system has been redesigned in this new Canon model, resulting in an enhancement of image quality and speed. The DIGIC III image processor and the 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor work in conjunction with each other to improve image quality and detail. Particular attention has been given to reducing digital noise and color reproduction.
Another tool for improving photo quality in bad light conditions is the Auto-Lighting Optimizer. This lightens up dark areas in the scene and maintains the tonal detail of the brighter areas. It is able to increase the contrast in ‘flat’ light settings, e.g. grey and overcast days.
The EOS also features an integrated cleaning system which uses ultrasonic vibration to clean dust that sets on the surface of the sensor. The self-clean sensor is activated automatically when the camera is turned on and off, or you can do it manually if you like. There’s a special collar around the sensor which gathers loose dust. It’s also possible to remove dust by using software.

Full auto mode is very accurate and seems to give excellent quality shots on every occasion. This mode is what makes the camera so great for beginners and intermediates. Portrait mode is not blurry, and the images are nicely toned and clean. Ideal for large prints.
The program mode is another nice feature. You can use it to set the exposure, which can be quite addictive. Bright and sharp colors can be seen in night shots, and night shots at 800 ISO produce very little noise at all. Even on a large monitor the images look great.
The 7 point auto-focus is lightning fast and very accurate. We’re yet to see a soft image while the auto-focus has been in operation.
